Requirements: 

  • 7-10 years, engineering degree with shipboard experience or Navy veteran in lieu of degree 
  • Experience with Navy ship Auxiliary Fuel, and Lube oil systems and/or Oil Water Separator (OWS) systems 
  • Experience serving as oil king preferred 
  • Experience validating EOSS and/or drawing diagrams onboard ship 
  • Knowledge of Navy chain of command  
  • Experience in design, repair, installation, modification, operation, maintenance, and testing of Navy equipment or systems 
  • Experience in troubleshooting or determining root causes of shipboard auxiliary systems 
  • Ability to independently review oil spill circumstances and technical documentation to assess root causes  
  • Knowledge and experience with root cause methodologies 
  • Ability to read and comprehend technical data (PMS, TM, OSS, etc.) 
  • Moderate proficiency in excel – ability to use filters, pivot tables, etc. to evaluate trends and produce graphs or tables 
  • Moderate proficiency in word – ability to use table of contents, headers, figures and tables. 
  • Moderate proficiency in power point – ability to prepare presentations and present findings/status to sponsor or provide training to waterfront personnel 
  • Attention to detail, must deliver error-free work products 
  • Good verbal and written communication skills 
  • Candidate must be highly motivated, independent, and self-starter, able to manage their own projects and coordinate the work with multiple stakeholders 
  • Candidate must have good interpersonal, problem-solving, analytical, and organizational skills. 
  • Active DoD Secret Level Security Clearance (or the ability to obtain this clearance upon position acceptance) is required for this position 
  • Ability to act independently in meetings and shipboard on behalf of customer 
  • 10% travel to Fleet concentration areas 
Job Responsibilities:
  • Review ship spill messages 
  • Maintain ship spill messages database – track spills in excel, and when needed manipulate excel to evaluate trends and produce graphs or tables 
  • Prepare oil spill summary reports that include the location, type of oil spilled, volume spilled, volume recovered, the operation in progress when the spilled occurred, and spill cause  
  • Prepare presentations for sponsor in-progress reviews 
  • Assess/investigate oil spills in concert with Navy in service engineering agent 
  • Assess ship’s reported cause against how such a spill could have happened.  
  • Determine what engineering/design features are in place that could have prevented the spill 
  • Confirm spill cause with focus hull, mechanical, electrical systems and equipment and related technical documentation 
  • Prepare recommendations, as warranted, regarding changes to engineering documentation or procedures that may prevent the spill from reoccurring 
  • Prepare biannual causal analysis report that summarizes findings of root causes and provides spill trend analysis 
  • Conduct oil spill prevention training to Fleet representatives 
  • Participate in miscellaneous meetings and prepare ad-hoc technical reports as required.
